Last week, my original work project evolved into something tangible in the form of a draft video - my visions and plans were finally beginning to come true!

After showing this draft to my mentor, he suggested that I should start filming and filling in the timeline as I go. Thus, over this past weekend, I ventured out to downtown McKinney to capture some b-roll and plan out how I would film my interviews.

My priority was to record a short sample clip to test my ideas for lighting and framing the interviews. After messing with lights and different camera angles and positions, I got a few clips that I liked, but as soon as I got home and began to color correct and grade it, I began to like it less and less. Something about the lighting was off, and maybe the angle too - perhaps I didn't notice these things while filming, or it was yet another case of imposter syndrome.

Nonetheless, I decided to take advantage of my late arrival period the next morning to go back to the studio and try again. This second round proved more fruitful, but there still seems to be some issues with the lighting - which is no surprise, considering how minimal my equipment is. This week, I'll consult my mentor on how I can set up my lighting differently to create a better scene. From some past conversations, it seems like he's good at problem-solving with minimal equipment. (He once told me that he strapped himself to the top of a slowly moving van to get a panning shot for a music video.)

Along with taking test footage for the interviews, I also took some b-roll footage of my mother drawing, some footage of the "Historic Downtown McKinney" sign in the square, and some scenic shots of the downtown area as the sun began to set.

Just six months ago, I never would have thought I’d be doing this. Previously, I was so dead-set on pursuing video editing that I hadn’t even opened my mind to the possibility of cinematography. I thought that because I was naturally so introverted and shy, I would work better in solidarity like video editors typically do.

However, through my ISM journey so far, I’ve realized that I thoroughly enjoy cinematography! Traveling to various locations and lining up a good shot, collaborating with people, struggling with lighting, and trying to get my camera to focus all compile into this beautiful art that I’m incredibly appreciative to be able to learn, even during Covid times. I may not be able to rent expensive equipment or get on sets, but I'm still learning quite a lot - plus, the process so far has been fun and especially rewarding since I'm doing this somewhat independently.

As far as my plans for the next few weeks go, I plan to begin filming the four interviews and continue to shoot b-roll. My knowledge and skills will be pushed and tested as I strive to create my best work for this project, but I have no doubt it will be worth the time and effort. I can’t wait to see how this project will continue to evolve!
